I spent last night in a fairly good Motel in Ajo, and the previous two
nights in Organ Pipe National Monument Campground.
I have now been in the Ajo, AZ area about 20 days, and am not as
favorably impressed as I was earlier. It is pretty remote, maybe too
remote:
- My cell phone only works on Analog, which takes more power and
for battery life the Motorola T727 is downright pathetic. (I should
update my
cellular phone page. I would not recommend
Motorola over Nokia.)
- There is a real problem with illegal immigration across the border.
I think it is likely to get worse. I see a lot of Border Patrol
activity. Much more than I saw last year.
- I don't know if the problem is related to the above Mexican
Immigration problem or not; but there is a lot of trash along the roads
around here. So much so that I think it will discourage tourists, which
I believe is the only source of income. Driving along highway 85 south
out of Ajo in the morning the roadside just sparkles with broken glass
for as far as one can throw a bottle. I have never seen worse.
- There is no mining, manufacturing or farming around here. The
only business is serving the people here, but that in and of itself
cannot sustain a community.
I plan on telling the realtors I spoke with that I want to look around
a bit more.
I plan on staying for another week or so at the BLM camp just south
of Why, AZ. And then will probably head east toward Tucson, AZ.
