I belong to no church, and I have no certainty about there being a
"super-natural". By the same token I have no conviction that there is
not a "super-natural". In many regards you could call me an Agnostic or
a Deist. (From: The American Heritage Dictionary. "Deism is the belief,
claiming foundation solely upon the evidence of reason, in the existence
of God as the creator of the universe who after setting it in motion
abandoned it, assumed no control over life, exerted no influence on
natural phenomena, and gave no supernatural revelation.") A lady
friend, who is much more literate than me, suggests that I should call
myself "A Heretic". I suspect she is right.
I'm a Heretic! ! !
I do not believe that any person has more connection with, power with,
or knowledge about a super-natural than any other. I don't think any
one religion is any more "correct" than any other. I believe they are
all products of the human mind trying to explain things that were not
understood and, avoid death, and gain salvation in a fantasized life
after death.

Problems that I have with all religions
-
I fault all religions in that they all teach that they are "right",
and by implication then others are "wrong." Unfortunately, it is a
short step for a religious teaching to go from: "We are right, they are
wrong" to "We are right, they are bad" to "We must oppose them" to "We
must destroy them." While religions claim to teach love and kindness,
in actuality, they are far more proficient is teaching hate and killing.
Most wars and killings are a direct result of churches and their
religious teachings. Look at history and what is going on today in
Ireland, around Israel, and in what used to be called Yugoslavia.
Here is a recent, February 17-19, 2003
Gallup Poll
that confirms that the more religious, the more likely to support war.
- Another area where I fault religions is that they survive by trying
to make people believe that the Church can in some strange way "save
them". Unfortunately, this leads to the belief that you can do whatever
you want so long as you: play up to, and pay up to your church.
- Churches need to have people feel guilty and in need of being
"saved." What better way to make people feel guilty than to teach that
we are "bad" because they have normal sexual desires. Here is just one
of many examples: The religiously righteous believe the sight of a
normal nude body will in someway damage the young, the elderly, and
corrupt all of society. Unfortunately, this silly notion, has so
permeated society that today you can be put in jail for simply letting
someone see your body. Thanks to religion, in some places women can't
even show their face!
- Many of the worlds problems such as pollution, starvation, animal
extinction and destruction of resources would cease to exists if we
would curb the ever increasing human
population.
But, in some form of
arrogance the two churches that I am most familiar with: the
Catholics and Mormons teach and practice exactly the opposite.
If you have comments or suggestions, not just arguments I would like to
hear your point of view. (I have long
since given up on trying to change anyone's religious beliefs, and you
won't change mine.)
