I have been a Verizon customer for over the last 4 years, and at one time I was happy with them; I think they tried to make a favorable impression when they took on the name. Verizon has its roots in GTE Mobile, whose management were crooks with no ethics and were trying to con customers. Literally with misleading statements which were not true to what they did, although it might have been in "the fine print".
A little over two years ago, I splashed water on my Motorola 720 phone, which put it out of commission--through no fault of Motorola. But, I was rather relieved to get rid of the Motorola phone. When I went into the local Verizon Outlet (not just a Verizon dealer) it was about ten days before my two year contract was up. Because the contract was not up I was told I would have to pay full price for a new phone, costing me in excess of an extra $200. While I was in the store another customer, a contractor, had almost exactly the same situation; but he felt he had to have cell phone service and, although unhappy, paid the full price. For me I could wait the additional ten days, but I decided it would be a fine time to switch vendors, and went and got a T-Mobile phone. But I was not happy with T-Mobile's coverage or the plan, so I returned it within the 15 day mandatory grace period.
With some calling to Verizon's 800 number I was told I could have my old plan back (which is better than anything they offer today--Sept. 2006) and get a phone at the "New Customer" price; but I did have to sign another two year contract. That contract was up on 2006 September 2, and I had verified it with Verizon about a month earlier.
I called Verizon on 2006 September 5 (I avoided calling on the second through 4th because it was Labor Day Holiday) and was told I could not cancel until September 25; because my billing cycle is on the 25th. I told the fellow, I think his name was "Tracey", if Verizon bills me for the 20 days from the 5th to the 25 I won't pay it. He refused, to put in a cancellation unless I would agree to the 25th. I asked for a supervisor; he agreed but simply put me on continual music. After 20 minutes or so I hung up and called them again.
This time I talked with: Garrett, his position was the same. I told him to put in a cancellation on the 25, and if they sent me a bill for the extra 20 days I would not pay it. He said they would send it to collections. I said fine and we hung up.
I will pay Verizon for 1/3 of a month, from 25 August through 5 September. That is approximately $15. It will be interesting to see how much screwing around they will do to cheat me out of twenty dollars.
For the last two months I have had a T-Mobile PrePaid phone and think it may be a "Cell phone best deal."
