I bought Garmin's Map Update 2009 DVD, for $100, to update the map data in my C330 GPS. I tried to use my HP tablet. It did not work, so I contacted Garmin support. After the initial contact I replied with the following information.

I have a HP tablet, with VISTA Home Premium (64-bit) It has a Dual Core AMD processor running at 2 Gig. I connected it to the Internet over a 44 KB dial-up connection. When I put in the Garmin Map Update 2009 DVD (which I bought at Wal-Mart) it immediately started download something from Garmin. Initially it estimated 14 minutes which increased but actually took a little more than a half hour. It then came up with a window which said to do 3 things:
I did them in exactly that order, but Windows eventually said it could not find the USB driver, and came up with an option to diagnose the problem, which I did. It eventually came up with a screen with a link to Garmin. I clicked on it. Which started it down loading a USB driver. (It was a .exe file with a name something like USB221.exe) which downloaded (it was near 900 Kbytes) and had an option to RUN, Save, or Cancel. I clicked RUN. This did not work either. (I believe the problem is that I have the 64-bit version of VISTA which is full of bugs, which HP tech support is very aware of but refuses to do anything about. and appears to require software which differs from the 32-bit version. ???? Ultimately, I will junk the computer or install Linux on it.) I unplugged the C330 USB connection and reconnected it which started the process over. This time after down loading the same 900 Kbyte driver I clicked on SAVE. Which it appeared to do, but did not solve the problem. By this time I had to give up. (I was late for a dinner appointment.) Fortunately, and not expected, the C330 still worked with the old map data. I have tried nothing more. I truly believe the problem, for me and Garmin, is Microsoft's VISTA 64-bit software. Let me know if you have any suggestions. LaFarr Stuart |
I got the following back from Garmin

Dear LaFarr Stuart, Thank you for contacting Garmin International. At this point, Garmin does not support 64-bit OS versions which is why you were having so many problems installing the drivers. If you have access to a PC that's running a 32-bit Windows OS, you may want to try running the update on that PC and it should work for you. Best Regards,

After this I tried and did successfully accomplish the map update using my older Fujitsu laptop running XP. But, it was so painful I would not recommend doing it using a dial-up connection; unless you have over 14 hours to spend. During almost the entire time my modem was busy receiving pop up ads about tons of Garmin products. It is arrogant and stupid to tie up a computer and phone line with pop-up ads. You would be better advised to simply buy a new GPS--besides this would give you a chance to try something other than Garmin.
