What has happened? I am 74 years old and what I have seen has been:
A decline in worldly knowledge, our high schools are turning out students who would not have gotten out of the fourth grade when my parents went to school.
My parents, learned in school by the eighth grade: to read and write. (Illiteracy was virtually unheard of.) They learned the names and capitols of every state in the country. They learned world history and geography. They knew their times tables and could do arithmetic, with fractions, using just a pencil and paper. At home they learned: How to: Bake Bread, Can fruits & vegetables, kill, slaughter and preserve a pig, plant a garden and preserve the products to last through the winter; and make Lye Soap. Their parents knew how to make gloves, sweaters and socks from just the wool of a sheep.
Most of all: My parents knew how to manage their limited income. They were not dependent on Government for Social Security, welfare, and assistance when they run up too much debt. Today: Far too many of us live on and expect government handouts.
Sadly today few under 30 can do any of the above. Most can't find the USA on a world map! We all have heard of the "dumbing down" and High School drop-out rate. I believe we are evolving into dumber animals , complements of our welfare programs.
America, started out as a country rich with resources well preserved by the natives of the land. It truly was a land of opportunity and many, mostly from Europe, flocked here to gain a better life. All they had to do, and did, was to kill off the natives and take possession. The Indians did not have the technology of using and making things from iron, nor did they have the concept of owning parts of the earth. They felt the ground, air, water and sky was for everybody. How simple. How primitive. How elegant.
The unorganized Indians were no match for the Europeans with guns, knives, swords, wheels and bearings. These "illegal immigrants" brought organized armies from a culture of warfare, who built fortresses, and felt the natives were just dangerous animals in the way, and should be killed. Even today, the Indians are being coerced out of their land (the only tiny possession of value they have) to build multi-million dollar gambling resorts. These resorts are not for the Indians, except where they can serve as peasants doing cleaning jobs, they were built and make money for a few rich "investors" who profit from gambling on Indian land.
