Early when I got a URL and an Internet connection my ISP supplied software that put his commercial and stuff up whenever I Started Internet Explorer. If I did something wrong or funny I got Microsoft's commercial page. When I clicked on the "Little House Icon" for my "Home Page" I got the ISP's Page.
I had seen the ISP's page enough I wanted to throw up! What I wanted was a page I Controlled! What I wanted was a simple page with links I could click on for things I liked.
I have a friend who was doing his own web site (About Nike missiles, which I am not really very interested in), so I asked him what I needed to do to create a web site. I knew my ISP provided me with a limited amount web space.
With the friends help, I soon had a Web Page I liked. And, in the process I learned I didn't have to up-load it to the web to look at it! By this time, I already had all the information I needed to up-load it. Further, I learned to make my page my "Home page" all I had to do in Internet Explorer: 1) Click on "Tools" 2) Select "Options" 3) Type in the location and name of my HTML file 4) Click OK. Walla! Now when I started Internet Explorer, or clicked on "Home" I got my page!
Unfortunately, I feel, too many people don't have their own Home Page because they don't know how to create one, and are afraid they can't. HTML has a lot of details. So does the English Language, but you don't have to know every word in the dictionary to be able to use English. The same is true of HTML.
HTML is the most basic way to create a web page. There are other ways, but they have to create HTML and in my opinion only: add a layer of confusion, keep you in the dark, and expand the page with a lot of garbage unnecessary for a simple, fast to load web page.
To this end I am in the process of typing to put up a few pages to get you to where: You can create you own web pages of what you like, and want to share with friends. It is not complete yet, but if you want to see my efforts click here or the link in the heading of this page.
