2005 July Bark Beetles Killed Pine Trees

Last Up date: 2005 August 8
When I returned to Utah almost all the pine trees were dead.
Maxine took all the photos on this page.

I spent nearly the entire month of July in Utah, at the old ranch. There were a lot of Pine trees dad planted about the time I was born (which is 71 years ago) and they got infested with bark beetles. A year ago I had to have 8 of them taken out. Those were close enough to the house I had to have them removed professionally. This year another ten were dead, but they were out in the opened.

Lynn Buttars came out with a big tractor with a back-hoe and a loader on the front. Using the back-hoe he dug down and cut of the roots on one side of the dead trees. He was then able to raise the back-hoe and literally push the tree over. This worked very well, and we were able to make the trees fall exactly where we wanted. Except for one which, fortunately, fell where no damage was done!

Unfortunately, we did not get any photos of the tractor and Lynn and his Grandson, Kelsey, using it.

Lainey wanted the wood. Warner & Maxine, Lainey & Jeff, and Cassie & Jorden came on a Saturday, 2005 July 16th, and sawed the branches off and stacked them in a BIG pile. The big logs are all stacked on the east side of the lot. Warner and crew, are planning to get the fire wood sometime later. (I don't care if it takes a year or more!) I really am gratefull for all the work they did!

dsc3757w.jpg Here Jordan is looking at the branches to be cut off. He is young strong, and did a lot of hot heavy work that day.

If you look carefully, you can see his chain saw near his left foot.

Also Jeff Gardner was there. Unfortunately, we didn't get him in any of the photos, but he and his son-in-law Jordan using chain saws cut a lot of limbs off.

Lynn also had a chain saw. It is amazing how much three strong guys with chain saws can get done in a day. In fairness, I should point out it was a long day.

dsc3759w.jpg Warner and I watching, a lot of work being done. We were the two oldest. ? Does that give one the right to "just watch"?

dsc3758w.jpg This is a photo of Warner and I standing in front of the old trailer surveying the mess. If you look carefully at the left edge of the photo I think Maxine is going into the house. Probably to prepare lunch?

dsc3760w.jpg This the start of a big pile of the dead limbs. I helped Lainey drag the limbs to a pile.

Lynn had a large truck and as I recall we hauled four loads of limbs out to a gully in one of his fields. Without Lynn I don't know how I would have ever got rid of all the dead trees.

dsc3761w.jpg We got rid of some other stuff. Here we are getting ready to load an old "Rod Weeder" onto a trailer for Warner to take to Thatcher, ID.

In the red shirt is Jordan, who recently married Warner's granddaughter. Lynn is in the center, and Warner is on the right of this photo.

If you look carefully, you can just see one rear wheel of Dad's old Model T Ford, on the left edge of the photo. I gave this to Warner, and if he has time he hopes to get it going! Again, Lynn was able to pick it up with the loader on his tractor and set it on Warner's trailer.

All these trees were planted about the time I was born 71 years ago. As Lynn pointed out: "We will never live long enough to see trees like this here again." I don't know if that makes me happy or sad.
